ARTboard Festival - Los Angeles - San Francisco, California
THEME: ART; and/as Public Service.
"A MAD IDEA!" "What, Me Hurry?"
The Medium's Message: Help Prevent Aggressive Driving
Participating artists express their vision or version of a public service concept. In this instant, it is... "A Mad Idea," "What, me hurry," or derivation, thereof. The intent, as always, is to promote Art, and Artists, allowing each to make their contribution to create awareness of the need to prevent, "aggressive driving." We've all experienced and seen this driving behavior, therefore, the opportunity to contribute to the dialogue has been well received. "What IS, the hurry?"
Artist, William T. Wiley, "Void," used on the left side of the above bulletin board, was created originally for the 1977, San Francisco ARTboard Festival. The work was acquired by United Airlines and has been on display, full size, 12' X 25', in the United Terminal Building at San Francisco International Airport since October, 1977. Mr. Wiley contributed a series of five (5) drawings for our upcoming event. They pointedly articulate Mr. Wiley's concerns about aggressive drivers:
2002 Grant Award Winner,
Artist, Melissa Powell's, Festival Card:
and Melissa Powell's ARTboard
"Doesn't Cut it!" Melissa Powell
2003 Grant Award Winner,
Artist, Ayumi Chisolm's ARTboard:

"What Me Hurry?" Ayumi Chisolm, aka, Sano
Also, five (5) of the original, nine (9), 16' X 50', canvases, from the February, 1977, Los Angeles Festival will be featured.
Several of the works that remain available from this 30 + year old event are:

D. J. Hall's "Midge & Madge", Paul Whitehead's, "Solar Carte," Karen Carson's,"How To Draw,"
Neon Park XIII's, tribute to his lost dog, "Tyrone of Tuhunga," became Little Feat's, "Hoy-Hoy!" Album Cover.
Artists, Rick Griffin, and Neon Park XIII, (born, Martin Muller), have passed away. Rick Griffin created the classic, BG 105, Jimi Hendrix, John Mayall, Albert King, or "The Flying Eyeball" in the Fillmore Poster Series for Bill Graham. In addition, Rick did several Grateful Dead Album Covers, "Murph The Surf" cartoons for Surfer Magazine, and so much more. Neon Park XIII is most known for almost every Little Feat Album Cover; and the infamous "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" for Frank Zappa. He, also, did covers and graphics for The Beach Boys, Dr. John, David Bowie and illustrations for National Lampoon, Playboy, Glass Eye and Dreamworks. Both Rick and Neon are featured in the book, "100 Best Album Covers," by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell. Paul Whitehead was the artist for Genesis', "Trespass," "Nursery Cryme," and "Foxtrot," album covers and Van der Graaf Generator in the 70s. Paul Whitehead, one of the founders of Eyes and Ears Foundation, conceived and helped organized the original, "Drive Though Art Gallery," ARTboard Festival in 1977.
We received news, recently, that another of the original participating artists, Mendij, has also passed away. Three great individuals and fantastic artists, Rick, Neon and Mendij.
Rick Griffin's, "Imperial Message," in Los Angeles, became, "Repent," in San Francisco, required restoration to remove a graffitti tag in black acrylic, "U. S. Invadors (sic) out of Granada NOW!," obtained while being shown in New York City, (restoration by Sano). Most of the show may be seen in New West Magazine's pictorial; and below under, "Eyes" history.

Billboard space provided by Clear Channel Outdoor, Division of Clear Channel Communications. With the people of Clear Channel Outdoor, we are re-introducing Eyes and Ears' unique, "drive through gallery" format.
This, ARTboard Festival, organized in the spirit of "ART, And/As Public Service," is intended to assist NHTSA, the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration, The Department of Transportation, (DOT), in their mission to save lives, prevent injuries and reduce traffic related health care and other economic costs.
One goal is to begin a "grass roots" movement to create awareness of their efforts to help prevent aggressive driving; and with it, the crime of "road rage." The term, "aggressive driving," is used, as the thinking is... most of us will admit to "aggressive" driving but we won't admit to "road rages." From personal experiences, we know that a significant percentage of us become "aggressive drivers" at times.
A primary goal is to implant the positive thoughts, "I AM A COURTEOUS & CONSIDERATE DRIVER," "What, Me Hurry?" in our fellow drivers, conscious and subconscious minds with a two pronged approach.
First: The ARTboard Festival project is designed to create awareness that we are, and can continue to be, "Courteous & Considerate," to one another, "WHAT, ME HURRY". The ARTboards are envisioned as thoughtful and fun reminders to all who see and hear the Festival message. For those participating, it allows an opportunity for individual expression and a contribution to a better driving experience.
Second: We are offering,
affirmations, to reinforce the concept on a continuing basis. One of our sponsors has produced the, <brain>stickers® affirmations, as a tangible reminder. These are also used a for fund raising tool. This sponsor has allocated all net proceeds from sales to support The Eyes and Ears' ARTboard Festivals.
